Scattered across the vast Pacific and Indian Oceans, thousands of islands share a
deep cultural bond. As early as the 16th century, Western explorers noted
striking similarities among island communities in appearance, pottery, boat
designs, and even language. Linguists later defined this connection as the
Austronesian language family.

For centuries, Austronesian seafarers navigated uncharted oceans using the stars,
monsoons, and tides, spreading across the Pacific and building thriving
communities. Among these islands, American Samoa and Saipan became crossroads of
East-West exchange, preserving rich, diverse traditions.
