American Navy Mate Shoulder Boards Epaulets

In the United States Navy, the terms shoulder boards and epaulettes both
refer to the insignia worn on the shoulder to show a sailor’s or officer’s
rank. For Navy Mates (such as Boatswain’s Mate, Gunner’s Mate, Machinist’s
Mate, etc.), the shoulder insignia depends on whether the wearer is an
enlisted sailor, warrant officer, or commissioned officer:
