What is ASTM A420?
ASTM A420 covers wrought carbon steel and alloy steel pipe fittings of seamless
and welded construction. These fittings are primarily used in pressure piping
and pressure vessel service at low temperatures. The most commonly utilized
grade is WPL6, which undergoes rigorous Charpy V-notch impact testing to ensure
it does not become brittle in freezing environments.
Key Grades under ASTM A420
While A420 includes several grades, the industry standard for most low-
temperature projects is:

WPL6: The most common grade, impact tested at -50°F [-45°C].

WPL3: Impact tested at -150°F [-101°C].

WPL8: Impact tested at -320°F [-195°C] (often used for liquid
nitrogen/oxygen).
Common Types of ASTM A420 Fittings
