Brass-clad steel
Brass-clad steel is steel that has been metallurgically bonded with a thin outer layer of brass (a copper-zinc alloy). It combines the strength and toughness of steel with the corrosion resistance, appearance, and workability of brass.
Because brass is more decorative and less conductive than copper, brass-clad steel is used mostly for mechanical, decorative, and corrosion-resistant applications, not for electrical conductivity.
Common Uses of Brass-Clad Steel:
1. Decorative Architectural Hardware
Door handles, knobs, hinges
Trim pieces, moldings, interior fittings Brass appearance + steel strength makes these durable and cost-effective.
2. Furniture & Consumer Goods
Decorative accents on furniture
Knife bolsters, pen hardware, lighters, and small luxury items Provides a brass look without the cost or softness of solid brass.
3. Fasteners & Mechanical Components
Screws, washers, rivets, springs Brass coating improves corrosion resistance and aesthetics.
4. Ammunition Components (Certain Specialty Types)
Some cartridge cases or blanks may use brass-clad steel instead of solid brass to reduce cost while maintaining corrosion resistance and formability.
5. Automotive Trim & Emblems
Used where a bright, corrosion-resistant, gold-colored surface is needed but pure brass would be too soft.
6. Coins (in some countries)
Certain lower-value coins use brass-clad steel to remain magnetic (for vending machines) while looking like brass.
7. Corrosion-Resistant Sheet Material
Nameplates, instrument panels, protective covers Steel provides structural strength; brass skin resists corrosion and offers a premium appearance.
