3D vs. 5D Bends: Choosing the Right Geometry

3D Carbon Steel Bends (R=3D) Often used in refinery and chemical plant processing where space is constrained but a smoother flow than a standard long-radius elbow (1.5D) is required. 5D Carbon Steel Bends (R=5D) The industry standard for long-distance transport pipelines. The buttweld 5D bend is essential for “piggability”—allowing cleaning and inspection tools (PIGs) to pass through the system without obstruction. It also significantly reduces pressure drop and internal turbulence.

Induction Bending Process:

▶Post-Bend Heat Treatment: To restore the mechanical properties of the carbon steel, all bends undergo Normalizing or Stress Relieving according to ASTM standards.
▶Surface Protection: Finished products are treated with black varnish, anti- rust oil, or specialized FBE/3PE coating for long-term corrosion resistance.
