China Deploys First Large-Scale Sodium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System

Datang Hubei Energy Development Co., Ltd. (Datang Hubei Energy) recently
announced that its large-scale sodium-ion battery energy storage system has
been recognized as one of the Top 10 Technological Innovations in the Energy
Industry for 2024 by the National Energy Administration (NEA). A key part of
this achievement is the Datang Qianjiang Sodium-Ion Energy Storage Station,
which marks a significant milestone in the commercialization of sodium-ion
battery technology.
Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a key energy storage technology for next-
generation power systems, offering cost advantages, abundant raw materials, and
a secure supply chain. This project represents the world’s first large-scale
commercial deployment of sodium-ion energy storage technology.
The system features a fully self-developed energy management platform that
integrates AI-driven data analysis and image recognition for early safety
warnings and intelligent operations. With an efficiency of over 80%, the
project has achieved breakthroughs in high-capacity sodium-ion battery
technology, system integration, and safety controls, all developed with
independent intellectual property rights.
