High-Temperature Resistant Seals for Shield Tunnel Boring Machines
n the world of tunneling and underground construction, tunnel boring machine (TBM) face some of the harshest operating environments. Between high-pressure slurry, friction from rock and soil, and the extreme mechanical loads of constant motion, the integrity of each component matters. Among these, the sealing elements—often overlooked—play a crucial role in ensuring efficiency and equipment longevity.
One of the most frequently encountered challenges is seal wear and thermal degradation. This is where wear-resistant and high-temperature-resistant tunnel boring machine sealing rings step in.
The Material Matters Unlike general-purpose seals, the sealing components for tunnel boring machine are typically crafted from specialized materials such as fluororubber (FKM), HNBR, or PTFE-composite blends, depending on the application. These materials are selected for their resistance to abrasion, swelling, and temperature deformation—ensuring they remain stable under both thermal and chemical stress.
In high-speed rotation or hydraulic pressure environments, traditional sealing solutions may harden, crack, or degrade over time. But engineered compounds in tunnel boring machine seals are designed to maintain elasticity, surface integrity, and sealing performance across extended operation cycles.
Design Beyond the Surface The geometry of tunnel boring machine sealing rings often incorporates multi- lip structures with integrated dust-exclusion features. These are not simply cosmetic additions. In practice, they create multiple layers of defense, protecting internal components from fine particles, mud ingress, and hydraulic fluid leakage.
Furthermore, wear-resistant designs integrate reinforced support frames, often using stainless steel or brass inserts, to provide dimensional stability. This reinforcement prevents distortion during installation and operation, maintaining consistent pressure against the shaft or bore.
Real-World Applications In slurry TBMs or earth pressure balance machines, such seals are typically applied in the cutterhead drive, main bearing areas, and hydraulic systems. Each of these zones operates under different stress conditions, requiring seals that not only tolerate but adapt to varying loads, misalignments, and temperature spikes.
It is not unusual for a single tunnel boring machine to require several different types of seals—each optimized for its local mechanical and environmental demands.
Considerations Before Selection When selecting a sealing solution for shield tunneling applications, several factors need to be assessed:
Working temperature range: Will the seal face ambient fluctuations or high sustained heat?
Exposure to slurry or chemicals: Are there aggressive agents that could corrode or swell the seal?
Installation space: Does the design demand compact sealing solutions or allow for larger profiles?
Maintenance intervals: How often will the machine undergo servicing?
A properly selected seal does not merely protect a single component—it helps prevent downtime, maintain pressure stability, and extend the overall service life of the equipment.
