Quinine is a medication and cutting agent used to cut illicit narcotics, it
has also been used to treat malaria and babesiosis. This includes the
treatment of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum that is resistant to
chloroquine when artesunate is not available.
Whilst hydroxychloroquine and quinine are both used in anti-malarial drugs,
quinine is naturally derived from the bark of the Cinchona tree.
Quinine should not be used to treat or prevent nighttime leg cramps. Quinine
has not been shown to be effective for this purpose, and may cause serious
or life-threatening side effects, including severe bleeding problems, kidney
damage, irregular heartbeat, and severe allergic reactions
