The Chinese have traditionally used schisandra as a whole body nourishing
tonic which has all five tastes and supports all five "elements". To the
Chinese way of thinking that means it supports the overall health and

The Fructus Schisandrae: The first word "Wu" means "five". The second word
"Wei" means "taste", and the third word "Zi" refers to "seed".

As the name of the herb suggests, Fructus Schisandrae is a seed with five
tastes, which are sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty.

"Fructus Schisandrae is warm in properties. It contains all five tastes."
The fruit skin is sweet, the fleshy tissue is sour and the seed core is
bitter and pungent. All these parts have salty tastes. The predominant
tastes of this herb, however, are sour and salty.

Difference of South and North Schisandra chinensis

In China ,there are two kinds : South Schisandra chinensis and North
Schisandra chinensis.

The orginal place of South Schisandra chinensi is Shaanxi and Hubei
Province . Jilin,Heilongjiang and Liaoning province is the main original
place of North Schisandra chinensis.

South Schisandra chinensis contains active ingredients:

Schisandrin A, Schisantherin A, B, C, D, E

Color ,shape and taste:

South Schisandra chinensis is spherical or oblate, with a diameter of 4-
6mm. The surface is brownish-red or dark brown, shriveled, shrunken, and
the flesh is close to the seeds.

North Schisandra chinensis. is irregular or oblate. Diameter 5-8mm. The
surface is red, purplish red or dark red, shrunken and oily; some surfaces
are black or red or appear "hoarfrost".
