Scottish caps pipe
Scottish caps worn with pipe band dress (often called pipe band caps) are traditional headwear associated with Highland dress and military piping uniforms. The most common types include:
1. Glengarry
A boat-shaped cap with a crease along the top.
Usually made of dark blue, black, or green wool.
Features a rosette cockade on the left side, often with a clan or regimental badge.
Commonly worn with diced (red and white check) or plain ribbons hanging at the back.
Very popular in pipe bands worldwide.
2. Balmoral
A round, flat cap with a toorie (pom-pom) on top.
Often knitted or felted wool.
Can be plain or decorated with a regimental badge and ribbons at the back.
Traditionally worn tilted to one side.
3. Feather Bonnet
A tall, dramatic headdress covered in ostrich feathers.
Worn by Highland regiments and some ceremonial pipe bands.
Often paired with a hackle plume in regimental colors.
Used mainly for full dress and parades.
4. Caubeen
A softer, wider cap (similar to an oversized Balmoral).
Adopted by some Irish and Scottish regiments.
Less common in pipe bands but still traditional.
Each style of cap is usually adorned with a cap badge (often showing clan or regimental insignia), sometimes accompanied by a hackle (colored feather plume).
Would you like me to also make a comparison chart with images of each cap style so you can easily distinguish them?
