An ultrasound machine can be utilized in the evaluation and management of knee
pain.

Ultrasound can be used to visualize superficial soft tissue structures around
the knee joint. A major advantage of ultrasound over other imaging modalities
is its dynamic use. It is very helpful to observe joint surface motion and
correlate ultrasound findings with patient symptoms. Keep in mind that
ultrasound cannot see deep into the bone, so ultrasound is not the imaging
modality of choice for any intra-articular lesion. As always, it is important
to use ultrasound as part of the clinical examination in conjunction with other
imaging modalities and the capabilities they provide.
