PROCAINE Basic information
Originally used to relieve pain caused by intramuscular injection of
penicillin, it is also used in dental surgery.
It acts primarily as a sodium channel blocker.
Procaine was first synthesized in 1905 by the German chemist Alfred Einhorn,
a little later than amilocaine.
Alfred Einhorn's trade name was Novacaine, based on Latin. (Nova- means
"new," and -caine is a common end-of-word for narcotic alkaloids.)
It was introduced into clinical use by surgeon Heinrich Braun, and before
the advent of stovaine and procaine, cocaine was the most commonly used
local anesthetic.
