Sea water desalination pump
Sea water desalination pump The core flow components (impeller, pump casing, shaft, etc.) of seawater desalination pumps are preferably made of duplex stainless steel or super duplex stainless steel to resist corrosion and stress cracking in high chloride environments. Core Recommended Material • Super Duplex Stainless Steel (e.g., 2507/S32750): Currently the mainstream choice for high-pressure pumps in large-scale reverse osmosis seawater desalination systems. With high pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN), it effectively resists corrosion from chloride ions and stress corrosion cracking in seawater, offering superior mechanical strength compared to ordinary stainless steel, making it suitable for high-pressure applications. • Duplex stainless steel (e.g., 2205/S31803): Suitable for booster pumps and transfer pumps in medium-low pressure or pretreatment stages. It offers better cost performance than super duplex steel and significantly outperforms 316L in corrosion resistance, making it a commonly used balanced solution in engineering applications. • Super austenitic stainless steel (e.g., 904L, 6% Mo steel): Used as an alternative in specific highly corrosive or high-temperature applications, offering excellent corrosion resistance but at a high cost, typically employed for critical seals or special components 316/316L stainless steel: Although containing molybdenum element, it has insufficient resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in long-term seawater environment, and is prone to local corrosion. It is only recommended for short-term, low flow rate or non critical auxiliary pipelines and is not recommended as the main material for core overcurrent components. bronze alloy (such as nickel aluminum bronze): a traditional marine material, but it is susceptible to cavitation corrosion and electrochemical corrosion under continuous operation conditions of seawater desalination, and environmental restrictions have increased. Modern large-scale desalination plants have gradually been phased out. Ordinary carbon steel/cast iron: no anti-corrosion ability, strictly prohibited from direct contact with seawater medium Distinguishing working conditions: The high-pressure pump (RO system core) must use high-grade materials such as 2507; The water intake pump/discharge pump can use 2205. Process control: Duplex stainless steel has extremely high requirements for welding and heat treatment processes, and it is necessary to ensure the balance of ferrite/austenite ratio, otherwise brittle phases may precipitate and cause failure. Non metallic materials: Some seals, bearings, or liners may use special engineering plastics such as carbon fiber reinforced PEEK to assist in corrosion resistance and friction reduction. It is recommended to prioritize API 610 standards material confirmation based on specific pressure levels, seawater temperatures, and project budgets
