Thermally Conductive Adhesive Provides Designed For Battery Cell Bond

In recent years, structure of battery pack changes a lot from module to“cell to pack”for increasing energy density. This Oct., we received an enquiry from Toyota Tsusho, customer consulted us about a thermally conductive adhesive for “cell to pack” battery pack, requesting a thermal conductivity of 2.0W/mK and a shear bonding strength of 8MPa. FAQ On Thermally Conductive Adhesive For EV Battery Cell Bond

Three years ago, thermal pad was a significant role, predominately in thermal management of EVs battery pack. With the advancement of EVs battery technologies, trend to shift away from thermal gap pad to thermal gap filler, providing a more closer contact between cells or cell and heat sink, and thermally conductive structural adhesive is the best in gap filler family. GLPOLY is the first one in China to develop thermally conductive structural adhesive for “cell to pack” battery pack in a new technology—modified epoxy which differ from existing PU technology. Consequently, we received many queries from engineers about properties of thermally conductive structural adhesives. Here I sorted out some information for your reference. Q: What’s the linkage between bond line thickness and shear bond strength? A: In practical application of “cell to pack” battery, there is no inevitable linkage between these two properties. Q: Shall the bonding strength vary with Al substrates? A: No matter Al3003, Al6063 or Al1030, the Al content is greater than 97%. It depends on the Hydrogen bond between crosslinker and metal atom. Effect affected by other factors is less than 3% which is within the range of tolerance. GLPOLY has full set of Al3003 fixtures for validating. Q: What factors shall affect shear bond strength? A: 1) Bonding strength decreases a lot if the surface of aluminum is oxidized to alumina; 2) Roughness. The rougher the surface, the greater the bonding strength; 3) Modifier applied on the surface. Depending on specific conditions. Q: Why not mark value of butt-joint bonding strength? A: A joint made by fastening ends together without overlapping. There is no need to test it because no butt joint happened between cell and water- cooling plate. Q: Why is it recommended to remove insulation painting? A: Painting increases thermal resistance. And in this case, it shows bonding strength between thermally conductive structural adhesive and painting, not adhesive and water-cooling plate. Furthermore, GLPOLY thermally conductive structural adhesive has electrical insulation. Q: Are contact thermal resistance the same between different substrates? For example, PET and Al? A: Both interface thermal resistance of PET and Al are between 0.000178~0.000679, but the contact thermal resistance is hard to test. our specification comforms to the result of nearly 300 regression tests. The contact thermal resistance is negligible due to extremely low value. By extension, the above conclusion is true in the application of soft pads. High Compression Rate Thermal Gap Pad Improves Thermal Contact For Battery

It is easy to produce thermal gap pad, but to be honest, there are just a few of manufacturers who can produce quality thermal gap pad, GLPOLY is one of them. Why do I say it is easy to produce thermal gap pad? The main contents of thermal pad are similar, you can make primary product easily with some additives. Why is it hard to make quality product? because of different grade of raw materials, different batching accuracy. They are vital to thermal and physical properties. Counterparts will mislead customer paying attention to a specific parameter, ignoring other parameters. A pioneering thermal management solution supplier will never do this. GLPOLY provides customers with customized thermal materials as requested. An ltalian auto component supplier, the engineer gave me two instructions when he found us 1) thermal conductivity is not less than 2.0W/mK, 2) Compression is as big as possible. He did not give a specific vulue to compression that makes it difficult to satisfy. This thermal pad was going to be applied in electric vehicle battery pack, so we recommended a compression of 40% according to our experiences. After test, customer fed back the compression is not enough with 700N pressure, leaving gaps between waterplate and thermal pad, if we applied bigger pressure, we’ll destroy the waterplate. We adjust the compression ratio to 60%, this is all what domestic counterparts can do. But customer said we need to improve 10% more after assembling. The other two suppliers said it can not be done, this is the most we can do. But GLPOLY is still working on it, changing raw materials, adjusting additives. Finally, we achieved a conpression ratio of 72%. GLPOLY imported raw materials from Germany and Japan, and processed raw materials again with nanometer grinder, making particle size samller to improve heat transfer. GLPOLY Thermally Conductive Adhesive-Extreme Temperature Cycling Validated

With the boom of electric vehicles, the structure of battery pack has been improved a lot, from module-pack to “Cell To Pack”, refer to “CTP”. It will decrease structural complexity, reduce overall weight of battery pack, increase energy density per unit volume and range, thus requiring a material combining two significant functions of thermally conductive and structural bonding, namely thermally conductive structural adhesive. At present, it’s not easy to get such a thermally conductive structural adhesive with high reliability. You can find PU based products in the market, but it never is the right solution for battery cell bond due to poor reliability. Why no engineers used it in battery pack instead of thermal gap pad or thermal gap filler in the past several years? because the performance and reliability of PU attenuate a lot in the next four to five years according to simulation of ageing test, It may lead to car recall event in practical application. To avoid this problem, GLPOLY has abandoned PU technical roadmap and developed a new material-modified epoxy based thermally conductive structural adhesive. This is a new technical roadmap far surpassing PU or epoxy based products. From the perspectives of thermal conductivity, hardness and shear bond strength, we can see the differences between GLPOLY modified epoxy based thermally conductive structural adhesive and PU or epoxy based products. Here are some test instructions: 1. Thermal conductivity. A/B component 1:1 mixed in volume, curing in 24 hours at room temperature. Specimens in Dia30X2.0mm are placed in ageing test chambers at 125 Celsius degree for 1000hours and in hygrothermal ageing chamber at 85 Celsius degree, RH85% for 1000hours. After testing, thermal conductivity of specimens will be tested to find the difference before and after test. 2. Hardness. Check the hardness directly after thermal conductivity test has been completed. 3. Shear bond strength. One end of two Al bars are overlapped and bond by thermally conductive structural adhesive, after ageing test, we test the bond strength by mechanical properties tester. GLPOLY thermally conductive structural adhesives are performance and reliable with data change less than 10% before and after test and has the features and advantages: 1. GLPOLY thermally conductive structural adhesive has 8MPa bonding strength, almost twice stronger than PU based products, enduring extreme temperature cycling test from -45~175 Celsius degree without crack; 2. Flammability UL94 V-0, goes out when leave the fire; 3. Service temperature -45~175 Celsius degree, short term: 250 Celsius degree; GLPOLY thermally conductive structural adhesives have been validated by EV customers and battery manufacturers such as AIWAYS Motor, Lixiang Motor, Xiaokang Motor, LISHEN Battery and more, and have been introduced for mass production. GLPOLY Thermally Conductive Adhesive Provides Flexible Cure Schedule

I’d received some enquiries from engineers of carmakers about cure schedule of GLPOLY thermally conductive adhesive XK-D20 series. To be honest, cure time is a critical issue for both engineers and suppliers. To engineers, it is directly related to production processes; to suppliers, cure time adjustment is related to change of properties of thermally conductive adhesive. So we need to find a balance between these two issues. GLPOLY is always at the leading edge of thermal interface materials development, it has provided a series of plans of cure time according to mainstream of processes in assembly site. One of our customers contacted me and wanted to short the cure time after he had tried XK-D20 thermally conductive adhesive. He said he wanted to know the change of critical properties if thermally conductive adhesive cured by 90% in 15mins at 90 centigrade, so he can fix a a proper assembly process. XK-D20 series provide three cure schedules including L(fast), M(medium) and H(slow). If the cure time of 90% cured is less than three hours at any temperature, the mechanical property will be changed, leading to a low elongation at break. If this issue was not concerned, L, M and H types could satisfy customer’s cure requirement, and the suggested temperature of L type is 100-125 centigrade.
