1.3243 Steel Forging Technology The alloy element content of M35 steel is more than 22%. It is higher than M2 steel about 30%. It’s forging is difficult. You need to pay attention to it as the same as M42 steel forging. First of all, preheat it fully, the heat temperature is 1120℃ – 1150℃. And the temperature of the beginning is 1000℃ – 1050℃, the ending of it is must higher than 899℃. After forging, it should cold slowly and annealing on time to prevent cracking. M35 Steel Annealing Process If you case it up for the annealing after the forging, you will get a better result. If you can not do that, just make it cold to the indoor temperature then make it in. About the annealing process, just put it in the stove with the temperature which is lower than 500℃. Then heat to 840-860℃, keep the temperature for four to five hours. Furnace cooling to 500℃ below than out of it. Cooling slowly in the annealing furnace. After the annealing, its hardness is lower than 255HB. In order to prevent oxidative decarburization happen, the annealing should be careful. And there is an easy way can do that. Just put some wood dust to the annealing furnace. Notice for Quenching and Tempering Preheat two times: 600℃, 860℃. And the time of preheating is twice the time of heating. The request of quenching is 10-12s/mm. Needs the step hardening: 600℃→260-280℃→air cooling. The temperature of secondary hardening is 535-540℃ around. The hardness is bigger than 68HRC for after tempering. But the factories do not want the hardness of cutting tool is more than 68HRC due to the request for production. So it always is been tempering. As we can see from the table, the best temperature for quenching is in the range of 1215-1225℃. In this condition, it is suitable for annual cutting tools. Its hardness is about 67-67.5HRC. It satisfies the needs of high speed steel high speed steel for high strength, high hardness and high wear resistance. M35 steel that been quenching at the temperature below 1190℃ is good material for cold work die and low-speed cutting tools. And if it been quenching at the temperature higher than 1230℃ which will have a great red hardness. M42 Steel Round Bar Sheet Plate Heat Treatment And Produced 1.Machinability It can be drilled, turned, threaded, broached, milled and tapped when it is in its annealed condition and rated at 45% of 1% carbon steel. 2.Forging It is preheated to 871°C (1599°F) in a slow manner and then soaked. This is followed by rapid heating to 1093°C (1999°F) and slow cooling. It is not suitable that temperatures below 982°C (1799°F) for the forging process. 3.Tempering M42 tool steel is tempered for three times at 538-593°C (1000-1099°F) and then cooled completely between cycles to get good results. Tempering is performed in vacuum furnaces or in salt baths. 4.Annealing Annealing must be performed after hot working and before re-hardening. Heat at a rate not exceeding 400°F per hour (222°C per hour) to 1500-1575°F (843-857°C), and hold for 1 hour per inch (25.4 mm) of thickness, minimum of 2 hours. Then cool slowly with the furnace at a rate not exceeding 50°F per hour (28°C per hour) to 1000°F (538°C). Continue cooling to ambient temperature in the furnace or in air. The resultant hardness should be 269 HBW or lower. 5.Hardening It is preheated to 871°C (1599°F), soaked and finally heated to 1204°C (2199°F). 6.Quenching A salt media is used for quenching M42 tool steel at 538°C (1000°F) and then the steel is air cooled. Heat to 600 °C – 650 °C, hold until temperature is uniform throughout the section, soak for 1 hour per 25 mm section, and cool in still air. Cold Working AISI 4340 alloy steel can be cold worked using all conventional methods in the annealed condition. It has high ductility. Annealing A full anneal may be done at 844°C (1550 F) followed by controlled (furnace) cooling at a rate not faster than 10°C (50 F) per hour down to 315°C (600 F). From 315°C 600 F, it may be air cooled. Tempering AISI 4340 alloy steel should be in the heat treated or normalized and heat treated condition before tempering. The tempering temperature for depends upon the strength level desired. For strength levels in the 260 – 280 ksi range temper at 232°C (450 F). For strength in the 125 – 200 ksi range temper at 510°C (950 F). And don’t temper the 4340 steels if it is in the 220 – 260 ksi strength range as tempering can result in degradation of impact resistance for this level of strength. Tempering should be avoided if possible within the range 250 °C – 450 °C due to temper brittleness. 4340 Steel Heat Treatment AISI 4340 alloy steel is heat treated at 830°C (1525°F) followed by quenching in oil. Flame or Induction Hardening As mentioned above, pre-hardened and tempered 4340 steel bars or plates can be further surface hardened by either the flame or induction hardening methods resulting in a case hardness in excess of Rc 50. AISI 4340 steel parts should be heated as quickly as possible to the austenitic temperature range (830 °C – 860 °C) and required case depth followed by an immediate oil or water quenching, depending upon hardness required, workpiece size/shape and quenching arrangements. Following quenching to hand warm, tempering at 150°C – 200°C will reduce stresses in the case with minimal effect on its hardness. All de-carburized surface material must first be removed to ensure the best results. Nitriding Hardened and tempered 4340 alloy steel can also be nitrided, giving a surface hardness of up to Rc 60. Heat to 500°C – 530°C and hold for sufficient time (from 10 to 60 hours) to develop the depth of the case. Nitriding should be followed by slow cooling (no quench) reducing the problem of distortion. The nitrided grade 4340 materials can therefore be machined to near final size, leaving a small grinding allowance only. The tensile strength of the 4340 steel material core is usually not affected since the nitriding temperature range is generally below the original tempering temperature employed. Surface hardness achievable is 600 to 650HV. Machinability It can be machined using all conventional techniques. Machining process can be performed in the annealed or normalized and tempered conditions. Welding Welding of steel in the hardened and tempered condition (as normally supplied), is not recommended and should be avoided if at all possible, because of the danger of quench cracking, as the mechanical properties will be altered within the weld heat affected zone. If welding must be carried out, pre-heat to 200 to 300°C and maintain this while welding. Immediately after welding stress relieve at 550 to 650°C, prior to hardening and tempering. If welding in the hardened and tempered condition is really necessary, then the work piece, immediately on cooling to hand warm, should be if possible stress relieved at 15 °C below the original tempering temperature.
